Cake Decorater I Am Not

I am sure you all guessed that Cameron's birthday theme would be none other then Mickey Mouse. Well, I was thrilled when my MIL bought a Mickey Mouse cake pan for me. I thought to myself that this would be the year that I would become a cake decorator and enjoy it. If you don't know me then you should know that I love to do things for others. I love making people happy and if that means that I try my hand at making a Mickey Mouse cake for Cameron's 2nd Birthday then I guess that is what I am gonna have to do. Now why in the world do I get butterflies just looking at the cake pan? I sit here and look at it and it makes my stomach upset. How silly is that? Seriously, I am so nervous that Cameron's Mickey Mouse cake won't look that great and then he won't be happy. I know that he is ALMOST 2 years old and he probably wouldn't care if Mickey was missing an ear or not, but I guess it is just the fact that I want it to be perfect for him. I want everything to be perfect for my little boy and I just always want nothing more then for him to be happy and loved. So, I am hopefully gonna practice on making a cake this weekend or maybe just try to figure out how to decorate it and then hope and pray that next weekend when we have his party.... that the cake looks just perfect for my little boy.

If you are familiar at all with decorating a cake then feel free to leave me some decorating tips. Here is the pan that I will be working with. Hmm, perhaps it would be easier just decorating a square pan and adding some Mickey Mouse figurines (lol). I guess time will tell and I will be sure to share pictures too!

My two year old is also OBSESSESSED with Mickey Mouse! My advice...I am impressed with your ambition! :-) I would have just used circle pans and made his head! :-) Can't wait to see how it goes!

I bought Lukas a choo choo train cake pan and yesterday was mine and my moms attempt at a practice cake. Ummmm it didn't really turn out like I wanted. I think I have some ideas to make it look better though. So hopefully it will look better for his party a week from today. I was even planning on making two because Lukas has two parties one with my family and his little friends and one with my husbands family. I think that I am just going to order a cake for the party that will be on Sunday because I don't think I can do two cakes. Good luck I am sure it will turn out great.

Oh I can't wait to see it. I have been attempting cakes myself lately, due to allergy issues. It is fun and all I can say is, I will get better. Check on line and see if you can find any pictures of that cake decorated, that way you have a photo to go off of. That is what I did and it helped. Good luck. Either way he will love it and know his mommy did something special for him.

You will do fine!!! I will send you a pic of CJ's Mickey pan cake. Maybe you can use it as a guide. My advice is to use icing bags and tips. This takes a little time, but in the end is easier. You can buy them at Target for cheap. Or I am sure wal-mart and other stores have them if you don't. Another piece of advice...make a trial cake that you can practice on. ;)
Can not wait to see the picx.

Good luck...I would make it for you if I could! You kinda just have to jump in with both feet. My best advice is to make sure you grease the pan REALLY well. or use "cake release" from Wilton...you can buy it at Hobby Lobby (if you have one in your area)..or I think they even have it at wal mart...if you don't get the cake out of the pan well, you won't have a pattern to follow when decorating. good luck!

Just remember...I think I can I think I can. LOL You will do great. This coming from a mom that attempted 3 cakes and then opted for cupcakes from now on. I know though that it will turn out wonderful and Cameron will have an awesome party. your invites were super great!

I love decorating cakes! I've never taken classes or anything, but I do have a tip for you if you are interested. I always do the stars instead of trying to get the icing all nice and smooth. That's a pain and I don't know how to do it! Also, use disposable icing bags. The others are a pain to clean out. Good luck and I can't wait to see a picture of it!

OK, let me try that again! I came across your blog through another one and just thought I'd say hi! We did a Mickey Mouse theme for my son's 3rd birthday party last year and it was so much fun! He's a huge Mickey fan! I come from a cake decorating family so I always do our cakes but I really don't think it will be that hard for you! First you do the whole thing with white icing, outline with black, then use your star tip to fill in the rest. That would probably be the easiest way (did that make any sense)?? I didn't do this actual pan, but I did do the indiv. size head pan for each kid, then a decorated pan for his party, and then a different Mickey pan for his actual birthday. You are going to have so much fun! Good luck!!!

I am useless with cakes! My mum is making the girls ones for me!

The video I made on my blog was done at onetruemedia.com

It is free! I have paid for a membership but I rarely use any of the extras!

What a cute cake pan! I know you can do it, just like the other girls are saying. When I have decorated cakes before, I usually do what Earl Gearl said and use disposable icing bags as well as use the star tip and make stars with the colors that I need to. In order to get black, you may have to buy the paste to help your icing become that color. I simply take the tips and use it to apply the icing instead of trying to make it smooth. Simply "dot" on the areas with the different colors and you will be fine. One of the last cakes that I did was a tractor and hay wagon. It came out nicely, but it did take some time. So, you will need some extra time to ice it. I would recommend doing the detail work first and then doing the other larger areas so that your details show up and you are not trying to squeeze them in after doing the larger areas first. :)

It will be great, I am sure! Can't wait to see the pictures of it when it is all done!

Lots of love and hugs,
Stacey :)
